WD Red 14TB vs Seagate Ironwolf 14TB NAS Hard Drive Comparison

WD Red 14TB vs Seagate Ironwolf 14TB NAS Hard Drive Comparison There is no such thing as the Perfect NAS Hard Drive

All Hard Drive manufacturers have differing techniques, different processes and most importantly of all, different products. Of course NAS specialised Hard Drives have only been around for a few years now and many still think they are just a gimmick to make people spend a little extra on a Hard Drive than a regular Desktop PC enabled hard drive or to make you favour one brand over another. However this is not the case. This isn’t about randomly claiming one HDD is better than another, it is about having a tool that is fit for the task at hand. A NAS Server is most instances is left powered on for 24/7 and with intermittent read and write operation, ranging from LARGE video files being accessed to thousands of small backup files being checked each sync, it is important that the hard drive media in your network attached storage system is up to the job.

Additionally, most NAS hard drives arrive with specifically NAS tailored firmware built into the chips on the HDD to optimize everything from temperature and spin, to vibration sensors and loading/unloading cache. So if ever someone tells you that buying NAS Hard Drives is just buying into a sales trick… just remember that it’s not about the cost, it’s about getting the right tool for the job.

Testing the 14TB WD140EFFX NAS HDD -

Now that WD Red has entered the realms of 14TB, with the release of the WD140EFFX NAS hard drive, the competition between drive manufacturers is really beginning to ramp up. We are long since past questioning the necessity of NAS optimized hard drives (i.e. RAID suitable, random read/write, 24x7 use, teaspoon vs fork, etc), but just how good is the WD Red 14TB NAS drive? We have long been using the smaller capacity WD Red drives in our Synology and QNAP NAS over the last few years, but after the 10TB, we saw a pause in their release schedule. Now, hot on the heels of the 10TB, we have this 14TB NAS build that, arrives at a price point that is very similar to it's nearest competitor, yet the internal specifications are distinctly different in two key areas (that we will go into later on) and it is no longer just a case of these drives being the 'same but different'.
