The improved Suhua Highway opened to traffic on Monday, after nine years of construction. Premier Su Tseng-chang and transport minister Lin Chia-lung attended the opening ceremony of the 38.8-kilometer road connecting Yilan and Hualien. Su thanked the project''s engineers for giving East Coast locals a safe way home. After nine years in the works, the improved Suhua Highway has opened to traffic. Our countrymen have always needed a safe way to get home. The government is striving to achieve this for everyone. Of course, it can’t all be accomplished in one go. It has to be completed phase by phase. The milestone we’ve reached today is not an end of our efforts, only the completion of a phase. And now, a new one begins.The improved highway cuts travel time between Taipei and Hualien by one hour. And as it becomes easier to get from Yilan to Hualien, more travelers are expected. All we hope for now is that the high-speed network in the west can be extended to Yilan. And that in the east, work can get started on express train services from Yilan to Hualien. The transport ministry says it will closely monitor traffic over the next two weeks and adjust its policies accordingly.
