Hiking is a great way to enjoy the outdoors. Many people have picked up this hobby as a way to have an escape from everyday stress and develop a more meaningful connection with nature. This can also lead to some extraordinary, but sometimes downright terrifying encounters with the wild animals you're sure to come across at some point. After all, you're in their territory now, so it's best to be mindful of that factor.
One spring morning along Coho Creek, which is located on southeastern Alaska's Kupreanof Island, a hiker came across a huge Alaskan timber wolf. The Alaskan timber wolf was caught in a trap that was set by one of the hunters nearby. Upon closer investigation, the hiker realized that the wolf appeared to have been nursing. It was clear that she had recently given birth and had pups back at her den who were probably hungry, and eagerly awaiting their mother's return.
When the hiker got closer to her, the wolf understandably seemed very confused and frightened. From her appearance, the hiker was able to guess that the wolf had been trapped there for only a couple of days. This meant that there was a good chance that her pups were still alive and well, but really needed their mother to return as soon as possible. The only issue is that the hiker was concerned that if he were to release the wolf from the trap, she would turn aggressive and try to tear him to pieces. This concern gave the hiker a genius idea.
He decided he would search for her pups instead, and began trying to find tracks that might lead him back to her den full of puppies. Luckily, there were still quite a few patches of snow left despite it now being spring, after a little while the hiker was able to spot some tracks. The tracks went on for about half a mile through the forest.
Due to the shy and cautious nature of wolf pups, they're sometimes very hard to locate and lure out. The hiker decided to try and imitate a high pitched squeak of a mother wolf calling her young. After a few moments, four tiny pups appeared. The pups seemed very friendly towards the hiker, likely due to their hunger causing them to overcome any fear they had. One by one, the hiker placed the pups in a burlap bag and headed back towards the mother.
When he arrived back at the mother, he let the pups go and they ran towards her. They immediately began slurping at her belly. It was clear that the mother was suffering and needed food. The hiker found a deer lying in the snow and cut off a hindquarter. Then he brought the venison back to the mother wolf. Trying to help and establish some trust with the mother, the hiker began feeding her chunks of the meat.
The hiker repeated this process over the next five days or so, winning over the trust of the mother as each day went by. On the fifth day, enough trust was established, it was time to let the wolf go free. The hiker was able to get the trap open, but the wolf's paw was still injured. The hiker gathered up his gear and escorted the mother and her pups back to their den.
