The sad reality is that many of our Veterans are suffering from Depression.

-Not many people are talking about it

-Suicide rates are through the roof

-The VA estimates 33% of Veterans suffer from depression. 20% suffer from Severe Depression and 12% suffer from Major Depressive Disorder

WHAT IS DEPRESSION?

-Defined by the VA, depression is “characterized by:
--low self-esteem
--lack of motivation
--lack of interest in social activities
--low energy levels
**It’s been found that veterans commonly experience this issue after being discharged.

WHAT ARE SOME COMMONLY REPORTED SYMPTOMS?

-The following symptoms are the most reported:
--Sense of hopelessness
--Inability to sleep
--Anxiety
--Lack of concentration
--Frustration and irritability
--Sleeping throughout the day
--Reduced appetite and weight loss
--Suicidal thoughts

WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCING SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION?

-You should seek help immediately
-Getting help should be priority number one
-You will most likely be diagnosed with depression or another mental health illness which is not a bad thing
-Next, you should be thinking about filing a VA claim for your depression
--Mental health symptoms are rate-able disabilities by the VA

The transition back to civilian life is stressful. Finding your purpose is a tough thing to do when you spent the last X amount of years in an environment that was challenging, structured and rewarding. You were part of something larger than yourself and civilian life lacks all of that.

HOW DOES THE VA RATE MENTAL HEALTH ILLNESSES?

-Depending on your severity of symptoms, Mental health illnesses are rated at anywhere from 0%, 10%, 30%, 50%, 70%, and 100%
-To be granted a rating for a mental health condition, the VA requires 3 things.

--1) You must have a Current Diagnosis
--2) You must have a NEXUS Letter describing how your mental health was caused or made worse by a service-connected disability
--3) You must have re-occurring symptoms.

WHAT BARRIERS WILL YOU FACE WITH COMING FORWARD ABOUT YOUR MENTAL HEALTH ILLNESS?

-According to the United States Government Accountability Office (USGAO), you should be prepared to face the following:
--Long wait times
--Feeling of shame or fear of being seen as weak
--personal embarrassment
--lack of understanding about mental health problems and treatment options

CONCLUSION

-You should never feel ashamed to come forward with your Mental Health problems.

-There are people who care about you and there are also people out there who want to help you.
-You are entitled to compensation for your mental health condition and it is well deserved.
