South China Sea Tensions Rise (Dec. 20, 2019) - UK, France, Germany ‘Concerned’ over SCS Tensions The United Kingdom, France and Germany have called for safeguarding Freedom of Navigation in the South China Sea amid reports that China has upped the ante by entering into Vietnamese waters over a month ago.

The Haiyang Dizhi 8 vessel first entered Vietnam's exclusive economic zone early last month and began a weeks-long seismic survey in an active drilling block operated by Russia's state-owned Rosneft Oil, triggering a tense stand-off between military and coast guard vessels from Vietnam and China. The Chinese vessel continued to survey Vietnam's exclusive economic zone under escort from at least four ships.
