The Trump administration will not be providing temporary protected status to people who fled the wrath of Hurricane Dorian. The status, which is enjoyed by people who fled natural disasters or war-torn countries including Syria, Somalia, El Salvador, and Honduras, can be granted by the Homeland Security Department under a 1990 law. An administration official said the Trump administration won't provide the temporary status for residents of the Bahamas hoping to work and remain in the U.S. while the country recovers from the catastrophic storm, NBC News reported.About 300,000 people are living in the U.S. under the status now.   Acting Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Mark Morgan said the administration was considering the status Monday – the same day President Trump said everyone fleeing the aftermath of the storm from the Bahamas must have proper documentation. 'There hasn't been any formal grant of TPS,' said Morgan, who added: 'I think that would be appropriate, to have that circumstance.' Trump on the same day noted that 'We recovering from the hurricane, also,' and during comments at the White House raised the threat about 'bad people' coming into the country.'Look, the Bahamas had some tremendous problems with people going to the Bahamas that weren't supposed to be there. I don't want to allow people that weren't supposed to be in the Bahamas to come in to the United States, including some very bad people and some very bad gang members and some very, very bad drug dealers,' Trump said.'So we are going to be very, very strong on that,' he added. Even without TPS, people from the Bahamas can seek to enter the U.S. on a temporary status, but this would not convey the ability to work here during their stay. The administration concerned about the potential for major immigration flow from the Bahamas to Florida, where many residents have family ties. The ferry ride from Freeport on Grand Bahama to Ft. Lauderdale can take as little as 2 1/2 hours.Morgan told CNN he did not want to see a 'mass exodus.' Trump owns golf properties in south Florida, including his Doral course and Mar-a-Lago. Some people have been permitted to remain in the U.S. for years after being granted temporary status.  The administration last month announced it would extend but not re-desigate TPS for Syrians living in the U.S. Those already enjoying the status and living in the U.S. can stay through March 2021. Trump made his comments Monday at the White House after more than 100 people attempting to flee the devastation in the Bahamas were kicked off a rescue boat bound for Florida for not having a US visa.
