Creating boundaries for your dog can help in many situations such as keeping a safe distance from a young child on a playmat, decreasing bolting behavior, and, as in our example, keep them safe from the many dangers in the kitchen. We chose the kitchen for this video because it is an area where a lot of accidents, sometimes fatal, occur with family dogs. I’m using painters tape as a visual cue, but you can use anything - such as mini traffic cones or even toy wooden blocks.
This teaching process is best reinforced in practice - when your dog if freely roaming the house and accidentally attempts to enter the kitchen. Being consistent, repeating the same expectation over and over again at the boundary line is where the learning happens. The consistency is what drives the success. If there is more than one person in your household, it is also important that the rules are the same with each family member, and each family member participates in the learning process so that your dog doesn’t develop different expectations or sets of rules with different members of the household, leading to failure.
There are several other exercises that you can do with your dog to help communicate boundary lines for things such as walking down the stairs, being in the right frame of mind entering and exiting the house, and so on. More about those in our other videos!
