What’s the key to a fulfilling life and career? Conventional wisdom says, “Follow your passion.” In his outstanding book, “So Good They Can’t Ignore You: Why Skills Trump Passion in the Quest for Work You Love,” Cal Newport says, “Not so fast.” Following your passion is not a guarantee to success or even fulfillment. Instead, through his research, he found that the foundational key for building a career that you can become passionate about is this: Learn a difficult or important skill. I can testify that when I reflect on my own career that Newport’s insights are spot on. I’ve worked hard to develop skill sets in multiple areas (academic biblical studies, entrepreneurial leadership, and coaching). Through this effort, doors have opened up that have allowed me to have the privilege to serve others in meaningful and fulfilling ways over the last 25 years.
