Klobuchar: voters understand 'constitutional duty'

(22 Jan 2020) After hours of debating on the first day of the impeachment trial against President Donald Trump, presidential candidate Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota fielded questions about how the trial would impact her candidacy.

She is one of four senators running for the US presidency whose campaign has been sidelined due to the impeachment hearing.

"I've made clear from the very beginning that I've got to do my constitutional duty," Klobuchar said, speaking to reporters in Washington during a break from the proceedings.

"People in these early states are going to understand that I have to do my job," she added.

Since the trial could run through the lead-off Iowa caucuses, these candidates, including Klobuchar, Sen. Bernie Sanders, Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Sen. Michael Bennet of Colorado may be left without the chance to deliver critical, closing arguments to voters who could set the tone for the rest of the race.
