Clashes as group attacks Lebanon protesters

Clashes as group attacks Lebanon protesters (14 Dec 2019) A group of men believed to be supporters of Shiite Amal and Hezbollah threw stones and firecrackers at security forces deployed in central Beirut Saturday.

Police fired tear gas to keep the men away, but the clashes continued.

The group had attacked the base of the ongoing national protests, apparently trying to storm it to prevent a gathering of anti-government demonstrators.

The attackers approached the camp in central Beirut from a neighbourhood known as a stronghold for supporters of Shiite Amal and Hezbollah groups.

This is the second time this week pro-Hezbollah and Amal supporters tried to attack the protest base.

They have been angered of the protesters' criticism of their leaders.

Lebanon's National News Agency reported one of the security members was injured.
