As I have said in my previous videos that I am studying in France for my YA. In this video, I would like to give you my advice when talking to non-native speakers, whilst you are abroad!
The first one is to speak more slowly! Let's be honest, that works with any language. Although their English proficency is high, it will take them longer to process information in English than in their native language.
Think from the the other personas perspective! I study French and German, and I would appreciate the fact that someone would speak a lot much slower when talking to me in both French and German. However, as a language student, my aim is to get French and German at a native level!
Now, my second tip is to avoid using slang. As I have mentioned earlier, you have built rapport with the other person and their English is great, they may not necessarily understand you when you use too much slang! Save you explaining things.
In addition to the point that I have just mentioned, I believe that slang should only be used in a spoken context. Can you imagine an essay written in slang?
The third tip is to use American English馃嚭馃嚫, sorry couldn't do the flags whilst editing the video. I have met other Erasmus students from different countries. In the description box, I will show you the flags of the countries that I have mentioned. May not be in chronological order as what I have said, but I will cover all the countries.
1. Spain馃嚜馃嚘
2.Germany馃嚛馃嚜
3. Columbia 馃嚮馃嚜
4.Brazil馃嚙馃嚪
5. Italy馃嚠馃嚬
6.Greece馃嚞馃嚪
I know there will be people who will disagree with me! I mean only when you are abroad, this tip will be a good piece of advice. If they are coming to England, of course use British English, because that's one of their purposes of coming to Britain to study.
Above all, I wish you a good journey if you are studying a year abroad. Just remember that people will really appreciate the fact that you are a native English speaker and there are many people out there who would like to practice their English. I wish you all the best!
Thank you for watching!
