Altruism is in fact what we do in economics due to the high degree of division of labour. However, we think and believe that we are entitled to request the highest possible salary, the highest prices for our products and services etc.
Modern economies are highly specialised collaborative networks of people completely intertwined with each other. Of 100 pieces of your work 99 or all will go to other people - and 1 or 0 to yourself. This is altruism fully established in real life. But why do we still believe that our income can be completely independent from that fact?
