It is hard to believe the fact that the Gilgel Abay (Young River Nile) flows over the Tana Lake just as it flows in its valley. This amazing natural phenomenon makes the Lake water fresh and drinkable.
As River Abay/Nile (floods) from the area highlands it is rich in soil (Mud.) That is why It is possible to clearly observe how the River is flowing over the Lake water because of its distinctive muddy texture (colour).
In most of the Islands there are Churches and Monasteries. According to my informants, there are 37 Islands and 21 Monasteries in Lake Tana. Most of the Islands are inhabited by humans mainly by Nuns and Monks. Nuns and Monks live separately.
According to the Ethiopian Orthodox Church a Monk or a Nun is a person who devotes his life to the words of God. A man becomes a Monk and a Woman becomes Nun when they abandon the material world so as to clean their past sins and to join the spiritual world. They abandon the contemporary society because of jealousy, deceit, self centred attitudes and treasons. They usually produce their own food by farming small plots of land and dedicate most of their time life in prayers. They believe that such peaceful practices will help them to communicate with God and to go to Heaven after death.
