You must watch video 4.10 before you watch this video. We can divide multi-digit numbers and check our answer with multiplication. Division and multiplication are inverse operations that undo each other. Inverse operations are opposite operations. We review the parts of a division problem as dividend, divisor, and quotient. To check our division, we multiply the quotient by the divisor. If the product is equal to the dividend, we did our division correctly. If there is a remainder, we add the remainder to the product to equal the dividend. We can use this method to check any size quotient. We quickly review placing the first digit in the quotient that we learned in video 4.10. We remember that we can turn our paper sideways to keep our place values lined up. Mixed-up place values and sloppy writing are common mistakes for math errors. We see what happens when there is a zero in the quotient. We estimate what a quotient may be by using a basic fact. If our estimate and quotient are close to each other in value, we know our quotient is reasonable. We show three word problems that involve multi-digit division, and one of them involves a table of information.
