Dr Maran talks about how the self-esteem of a child is affected if he or she is obese. The teasing of their peers, parents, relatives, and the larger society can affect their self-esteem. For example, body shaming and bullying can cause them to develop low self-esteem and this might also result in losing self-confidence having a lifelong impact too if not addressed.

Dr Maran quotes examples of how an obese kid is treated. In sports, they are given the job of an umpire in cricket, or a goalie in football. If there is a school drama, they are given the role of a joker, a comedian or a villain. The discrimination starts at school and continues in the job place too. The child cannot normally express this and most parents do not have an understanding of these issues. As a consequence of all these, they might lose interest in studies, or they might become aggressive, etc. Dr. Maran, therefore, concludes that it is the duty of the teachers, students, and others to support obese children in their determination to get healthy.
