*Valmets are legal to possess in Canada with a PAL provided they have a 18.5”+ barrel
Semi auto Valmet m78 & m88's are currently the only legal true “AK variants” in Canada. Some other similar appearing legal firearms are the vz58/cz858 series of rifles and the Chinese Type 81. Valmets are specifically listed as exempt in OIC #13, which is the legislation that created the 12.5 class of prohibited rifles, effectively banning all AK variants with this small exception. The “Galil” clone rifle is just a valmet m88 with some galil aesthetic components installed to give the cosmetic appearance of a Galil. The Valmet m76 clone rifle is a .308 m78 stamped receiver outfitted with aesthetic components from a m76 parts kit. This does not change the designation of either rifle. They remain legal valmet m78/m88 firearms.
