(18 Aug 2019) More than two thousand mothers simultaneously breast-fed their babies on Sunday during a mass breastfeeding event in Manila. The event is called "Hakab Na", a Tagalog word which means 'latch on' and is the the biggest annual breastfeeding event in the Philippines.
The aim of the annual event, which takes place during World Breastfeeding Week, was to spread awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding children.
Mothers on Sunday sat as they latched on with their babies at the same time for one minute.
UNICEF's Chief of Health and Nutrition, Dr. Wigdan Madani said that 2018 data showed only 29% of Filipino children were breastfed up until six months of age.
"This is really low coverage for a middle income country," she said.
The World Health Organization recommends feeding babies exclusively by breast feeding during the first six months of their lives.
