The text found inside your YouTube description box is indexed by search engines and is used by the search engines to rank your video accordingly. While it’s possible to rank on YouTube without a big description box, you would also be missing out on valuable watch time as many YouTubers scroll through a description box while the video is playing.
Your video description needs to accomplish a few things.
First, it needs to tell people what your video’s about.
Second, it needs to be compelling enough to click.
Your youtube video description’s first 2 or 3 sentences are the most important for two reasons:
They appear with your video in search results and suggested videos
They appear directly below your video while it plays
A smart YouTube plan will include a keyword optimized, structured description box with every video.
To help your video rank better,
Use your main keyword at least three times throughout and try to mention it first within the first 25 words.
Then, choose two keyword variations to also include in your description and mention those two times each.
Include a call to action to whatever you want your new viewers to do. Do you want them to subscribe? Turn on notifications? Share your content? Or maybe sign up to receive newsletters? Whatever you want them to do, ask them to do it! Word it in a way they won’t be able to resist.
Use timestamps for easy navigation
If your video is longer and covers a variety of topics, use timestamps to make it easy to navigate to specific points quickly.
Write the video description like you are talking to a friend.
You don’t want to make your VIDEO description too formal. It should be easy to read, or even skim, with short sentences and paragraphs and maybe even bullet point, if that is applicable to your content.
